Outsourcing

It seems that quite a few people somehow believe that outsourcing minor or even major job functions is difficult. “It’s hard to find the right person”, or “How can I trust someone with that task?” are common comments that can be heard when talking about outsourcing. The misconception is that you or your company will be ripped off, or the individual performing the task won’t be up to par, or even that they’ll mess things up which will cost more than their day’s salary to correct.

In actuality though, this is hardly the case. Sites like Elance, Rent A Coder and even Craig’s List make it easy to find talented people.  Most of these and similar sites have a rating and/or feedback system.  This takes a bit of the guesswork out of hiring the right person because you can see how other employers rated their performance.  Also, these sites make it very easy to find the right person to fit your budget.  On sites like elance.com potential candidates bid for the position so while you might have budgeted $150 for the project you might find three or four bids for $65.

It is also possible to foster long term relationships with the freelance / contract workers that you find on these sites.  Many of those that work for you will be happy to do long term work for their same cheaper than industry standard pay.

But the best thing about outsourcing individual projects or specific ongoing job tasks is that it frees you (or others) up to do much more important things.  If you are the owner of a small business you shouldn’t spend all of your time processing orders; hire a temp to do it for under $10 an hour and focus on growing your business or getting back to that advertising partner you told you’d call back yesterday.

Vertical Search Fallacy

As I’ve stated before, the “bigger footprint” approach doesn’t apply to Search Engine Result Pages like it does to retail properties. The fallacy is that most people do vertical searches. This isn’t the case. Most people do not search for something then go from the #1 result to the #2 result to the #3 result and so on. Once a person has clicked on a result, if they didn’t find what they were looking for, do not click back and go to another result for the search query they just typed in. Instead they search for a different term. After all, the # 1 result is supposed to be the most relevant site for the search term.

So the key to winning the battle online moves away from opening up a franchise on every corner – the divide and conquer approach, to having one site that ranks high for more keywords. Because most people don’t use the vertical structure of the Search Engines, the focus needs to switch from having more sites to making one site rank well for as many search phrases as possible.

Take a look at any big and successful company, how many websites do they have? How many sites does Home Depot own? It is in Home Depot’s best interest to have a physical store within ten miles of every home owner but on the web they only have a single site. Most companies want to create a brand because that is where the real leverage is. Home Depot doesn’t have to worry about SEO because when someone wants a hammer they don’t search for “hammers” but rather type in homedepot.com directly into their address bar.

May sees further slump in mortgage approvals

According to a recent report mortgage approval levels slumped to a record low in May. Officials from the British Banker’s Association have said that there were just 27,968 mortgages approved in May, and this was a drop of 20% compared to the previous month and a whopping 56% drop compared to May of last year, before the global credit crunch came into effect. At the same time the average rate of interest on a two year fixed rate mortgage has rocketed to over 7%.

The Council of Mortgage Lenders also released figures that showed the average rate on a two year fixed rate mortgage was now 7.02%, rising from an average 5.62% just one year ago. This is despite the fact that since December the base rate has been cut three times by a total of 0.75% by the Bank of England. May is generally regarded as one of the strongest months in terms of house purchasing, but the combination of low mortgage loans approvals and higher interest rates has really taken its toll.

One leading economist described the figures as very worrying, adding: ‘The BBA data graphically highlight that housing market activity is currently being throttled by stretched affordability and tight lending conditions.’ Another industry official said: ‘As the rates on offer increase, so does the relative risk. More and more borrowers are likely to find the increased repayment too much to bear.’

He added: ‘These are continuingly worrying times for anyone coming to the end of their current mortgages deal. However, it seems not all is lost as there could be some light at the end of the tunnel for borrowers. Today, Swap rates have decreased from the 6.52% high last week, by 0.16% to 6.36%. We hope that this recent downturn is not short lived and trust that lenders will play a fair game by reflecting this decrease in the rates that they will have on offer in the next few weeks.’

Home Theater Projection System - Better than a Flat Panel?

With the cost of large flat screen televisions becoming increasing affordable almost by the day, there is little excuse in taking the plunge and purchasing one. Before you shell out that kind of money though, you’ll want to do your homework to make sure you get the best deal and also, you’ll want something that’s built to last. So by now, you might have started shopping around and that’s all well and good, but what if you want something bigger and more affordable than that 42 inch LCD flat panel you’ve been eying?

If you’re going to be entertaining often or you want to watch your television in larger than life quality, then perhaps an LCD Projector is what you’ve been seeking. Home theater projectors have come a long way in terms of quality and price. If you’re thinking about settling for a simple large screen television then you might want to reconsider. A home theater projector will make you feel like your at the movies—without leaving your house! LCD Projectors are perfect for entertaining guests of both large and small groups. The only limit to the size of the picture is the projector screen, which for ten feet of picture is relatively inexpensive.

So if you’ve been waiting for that next holiday special at the local electronic store to buy that new television, you might want to think again. A home theater projection system will have a much larger viewing area and is much more affordable.

Getting Out of Debt

Getting out of debit is a problem for many Americans.  With the ease of credit card use, it is easier than ever before to amass a large amount of debt in a very short amount of time.  It seems that every store has their own credit card you can sign up for — and with their tantalizing offers, refusing is often easier said than done.

So what does one do if they want to get rid of their debt problem?  Well, besides screaming “Help me get out of debt!”, there are a few good resources online that help to explain the possible options.  Getting out of debt and then staying out of debt is much easier when you don’t do it alone.  There are quite a few debt assistance programs out there to choose from.  The good folks at PayingPaul.com offer a range of debt management solutions — They can reduce your debt by up to 40% or even 60% which is great news for anyone trying to crawl out from under the large looming shadow of bad credit.

If you’ve had a bankruptcy discharge then you’ll defiantly want some help.  Finding good resources online is relatively  easy and most programs can reduce your payments almost immediately.

Make Money Online

How to generate a passive stream of income is a question most of us would like an easy answer to.  If it’s one thing we can all use, it is more money.  And for most, the easier to make the money the better.  That’s why online revenue streams appeal to a lot of people.  Making money by use of the Internet is a lot easier than starting a traditional business.  For starters, the start up capital, if there is any, is much lower than opening up a brick and mortar store.  Also, there are so many ways to make money online that the possibilities are almost endless.

If you are more traditional, you can open up an online retail store.  Online storefronts act very much like their offline counterparts in that customers browse the shop for products they wish to purchase.  One of the only differences is that when shopping online the goods are delivered to your door a few days after the sale instead of you walking out of the store with them immediately after the purchase.  For a lot of individuals, have the items delivered is well worth the wait, especially if they are from a specialty store that the person might not have in their hometown.

Another way to make money online is by starting a blog.  There are lots and lots of blogs out there and only a small portion of them are properly monetized.   The great things about blogs is that anyone can start one and you can do it without spending a dime.  Now to make it successful, you will probably want to invest a small amount of money otherwise you probably won’t get that many visitors.  And hopefully as you know, visitors equal cash.

If you are stumped about how exactly to start making money online then you might want to check out a few places that are already successful.  One such place that is worth a read is Money Maker Info.  This blog offers tips, tricks, and ideas about how to start a profitable online venture.  If you want to find a money making opportunity then you’ll want to check out Money Maker Info.

Looking for Men’s Clothing?

I’ve recently found a new online men’s clothing store that you might want to check out. It’s called Cutting Edge Jeans and can be found at Cutting-edge-jeans.com. This is a great store which specializes in fine men’s clothing from such makers such as Ed Hardy and True Religion. You will, of course, find Cutting Edge to be the best clothing store for True Religion Jeans, but you will also find an assortment of many other very unique items such as Ed Hardy Shirts and Coogi. With their great prices and the ability to order from my home, this is one store that I’m sure to visit over and over. Seriously, the Bow and Tiger jeans from True Religion are awesome.

Raw Foods and Your Child

Every parent wants the best for their child; this point isn’t ever questioned.  But the question is: What exactly is best for your child or children in general?  Wanting a healthy, energetic child is normal, but what do we do to ensure that happens?  One thing that surprises a lot of people is how harmful allowing your child to eat unhealthy foods really is.  Fast food and most prepackaged snacks aren’t great for adults but for children they are even worse.

To ensure that your child is eating a prober balance of nutrients, you must feed them plenty of fruits and vegetables.  The daunting task is to make your child actually want to eat these kinds of foods.  One easy way to get some fruit into their diet is to add fresh fruit to normal breakfasts.  Fruit platters that contain oranges, apples, bananas, etc offer a great way for children to pick up a few slices of fruit on the go.  Adding fruit such as strawberries, blueberries, and other such sweet fruits to cereal, oatmeal, or any other favorite breakfast is also an easy way to increase your child’s fruit intake.

Another easy thing to do is only buy drinks that contain 100% fruit juice.  This means no cokes or other soft-drinks.   Only offering water at certain times of the day will also help.

Use raw, uncooked vegetables as snack ideas.  Small, baby carrots or peanut butter and celery are just two quick and easy snack ideas that are much better for your child than the usual chips and cookies.  Mixing mushrooms, broccoli and other such vegetables into foods your child already likes should have good results.

And one last idea: If your young child(ren) sees you eating healthy, chances are they’ll do the same.  By setting an example early on your child will learn that healthy foods are actually good for them and actively seek them out.

Reading Activities

In a world that is slowly turning away from books and becoming glued to monitors or television screens, the importance of developing a passion for reading cannot be understated.  Reading is a good habit and should be established when the child is relatively young.  What can you do to foster this habit?

Enroll your child for reading classes:
There are many well structured after school reading classes that aim to draw the children to books. They help kids with diction, idioms and phrases. For young children, these classes can be fun with animated
characters and pictures. Illustrated picture books, rhymes, silly songs and make-believe stories all attract the young child. Use creativity to capture the child’s vivid imagination.

Build a home-library:
A skill like reading cannot be learned in isolation. Do not leave all the hard work to the after school program. Pick up books that you think your child will like and read to them often.  A child’s favorite bedtime story doesn’t just have to be saved for bedtime.

As adults, we often simply don’t have time to sit down and read.  Our busy lives do not make it easy to do many of the things we like.  If you have young children and you read to them or have a special time set aside solely for reading then this will help everyone.

Remember, books can be magical and they always remove of, if even a little, from our normal everyday existence.  Reading also helps the mind stay sharp and focused, something you’ll wish you had more of in your older years.  For these reasons it is very important to develop a love for reading early on and then rekindle it every so often.

Four Signs Your Job May Be In Danger

Worried you might be in line to be laid off, or worse yet, fired? Here are some signs to watch out for.

1. The Consultant

A consultant is the person that comes in to reevaluate how things are done and to make new plans for how to make them better. Sometime, a consultant’s job can be to decide who stays and who goes. If a consultant has recently came on board in your department and they are spending a lot of time with you, have your resume at the ready. But don’t panic. Convince the consultant of your abilities and you might not have to worry.

2. Closed-door Meetings

If your once strict open-door policy boss is having numerous closed-door meetings with his superiors, chances are things don’t look good. Change is looming overhead and if the doors have to be closed it probably isn’t good. Your job might not be on the line at this point, but it is a good sign to get ready for that possibility.

3. New Management

If there is a new outside supervisor, manager, or C-level executive above you and/or your department then you don’t have the luxury of your previously earned trust. This new individual knows next to nothing about you so do go out of your way to earn it. Don’t be surprised if this person wants to bring in a few other outside members to be on his or her team. If this happens you may want to start posting your resume online just to be on the safe side.

4. Change in Responsibilities

Some experts say that if your responsibilities change over short periods of time, without a prior evaluation, and the new position is presented as a true opportunity, but you know very well that no one wants that job, then you should keep your eyes wide open. Also, if you are given less and less work and it seems as if no project is for you, then you probably want to start scheduling outside interviews. Another sign to watch out for is being left out of meetings.

If any or all of these things are happening to you, don’t just give up, especially if you like your job. Just strive to do things better and make an honest effort. Usually hard work pays off and gets noticed.
